Juxiang is born into a large Straits Chinese family. She is the daughter of a mistress of low status. Gentle and beautiful, she has picked up amazing culinary and sewing skills from her mother as a child. Born deaf and dumb, she suffers discrimination from people around her. On the eve of the Japanese Occupation, she is arranged to marry a rich Baba as his mistress. Juxiang defies the arrangements and runs away. She meets a young Japanese photographer, married him and gave birth to a daughter named Yueniang. The turbulent times put her through much hardship and torture. Both husband and wife died, leaving behind their 8 year old daughter, Yueniang.
